Many seniors who have the time and the money that would allow them to travel are prevented from doing so by another factor. Many seniors have health problems or disabilities that make them feel unable or afraid to travel. With planning and research many seniors who presently don't could enjoy travel as much as those who don't have health problems.

The most common problems encountered while traveling will most likely be problems with mobility, the need for oxygen or need for professional medical oversight on an intermittent basis. Lets examine these areas more closely.

Access

  • Will climbing stairs be necessary? Perhaps ground floor accommodations are available. If you will be using an elevator what alternative to stairs is available in case of fire?
  • Will you be required to walk long distances? Will the walking be on an incline? Will wheelchairs or motorized wheelchairs be available?
  • Are the rooms, restrooms etc. large enough for a wheelchair or walker? Where do I stow my walker on an airplane? Is the bathroom private to my room or is it a shared bathroom? Do the bathrooms have a tub or shower

Oxygen and Other Medical Care

  • Air Travel with oxygen is possible with some advanced planning. Travelers are not allowed to carry their own oxygen on aircraft due to federal aviation regulations but can be supplied by the airline for a fee. You or your travel agent will need to arrange this with the airline in advance. Oxygen at your destination will also need to be arranged. The company that provides your equipment at home may have a branch at your destination that will be able to supply the oxygen for your trip. The costs of the oxygen from the airline are not likely to be covered by either Medicare or other insurance if it duplicates equipment they have already paid for. These costs should be figured into your vacation budget.
  • Automobile travel is somewhat easier with oxygen but does require some planning. Check with your oxygen supplier for help with obtaining refills of oxygen while on the road.
  • There are travel companies that cater to travelers with medical needs. From oxygen to dialysis you should be able to find one that meets your medical needs.
