Detrol Basics:
Detrol is the brand name for the drug tolerodine and is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. Many people will remember this drug from the TV advertisements with the tag line "gotta go". It relaxes smooth muscles in the urinary tract by inhibiting acetylcholine at postganglionic sites.
What is Detrol Used For:
Detrol is used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder that include urinary frequency and urgency. Overactive bladder is caused by the muscles or nerves that control bladder function being too active or sensitive. The nerves and muscles can be damaged by by diseases such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's, stroke or injury to the bladder/pelvic area. In some women damage during childbirth can cause this.
Forms of Detrol:
Detrol is available in one and two mg tablets. It is also available in two and four mg extended release caplets.
Facts About Overactive Bladder:
Overactive bladder (OAB) is caused by spastic contractions of the detrusor muscle that surrounds the bladder. This spastic contraction maintains high pressure on the bladder making the urge to urinate almost constant. Usually the muscle responds to the volume of urine in the bladder. The cause is generally not known for those who suffer from this condition. OAB can greatly affect quality of living, making frequent and urgent trips to the bathroom necessary, along with loss of bladder control.
Side Effects of Detrol:
Possible side effects can include
- ]li]Allergic reaction with swelling and breathing difficulty. If this occurs seek medical attention immediately.
- Dry mouth
- Dryness of the eyes
- Blurred vision or large pupils
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- Constipation
- Difficulty urinating
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Who Should Not Use Detrol:
- Pregnant or lactating women
- Children
- People with renal (kidney)or hepatic(liver) disease
- People with controlled narrow-angle glaucoma
What You Need To Know About Detrol:
Be very careful in hot weather to maintain adequate fluid intake and avoid becoming overheated. Detrol can decrease sweating and contribute to heat stroke. When first taking this medication avoid driving or operation of heavy machinery until you can determine if it makes you dizzy or drowsy. Avoid alcohol intake while taking this medication. Inform your doctor of all medications (including over-the-counter) you are taking as some may interact with Detrol.
