Definition: Aneurysm is an abnormal widening or dilatation of a blood vessel, usually an artery. It is generally localized, affecting the blood vessel in a limited area and can be a result of a congenital defect or weakness of the vessel wall.

Many seniors suffer from Aortic Aneurysm. The most common cause is arteriosclerosis that is accompanied by hypertension. Patients with aortic aneurysm should be monitored closely. If the aneurysm gets larger the risk of rupture increases. Most people who suffer a ruptured aortic aneurysm die before treatment can be started due to rapid blood loss.

Pronunciation: an'u-rizm
Common Misspellings: anurism
Examples: Bob died from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. He collapsed on the sidewalk and died within a few minutes.
