Is it common for a senior to be somewhat disoriented after being placed in a skilled nursing facility? My father was placed in one to get some rehab for weakness in legs and arms. He is very confused as to where he is, yet knows my sister and me.
When you talk with his doctor ask about his condition and use these questions as a way to help learn more about changes in his condition that may be playing a part in his confusion. What is the cause of the weakness? Did he have a small stroke? Is he suffering from depression? Have his medications changed? Is his confusion a result of these changes? How is his nutritional status? How is his eyesight? Has he had an eye exam.
If possible try to bring in some familiar items and make sure he has a clock he can read.
Be sure to let the nursing staff at the facility know that this has not been his normal state of functioning. They may be able to observe situations that increase or decrease confusion and can take the steps needed to help keep him safe.
