Question: What usually causes death in people suffering from Picks Disease?
Recently my dad has been diagnosed with a form of picks disease.
I have looked it up on many websites, and they all say "death is normally caused by infection". Are you able to tell me what this means? as i don't understand thank you for your time regards.
Answer: Picks disease is a progressive form of dementia that initially presents with personality changes, that can include apathy and indifference, Poor social judgement, inappropriate sexual advances, or a coarse and jocular demeanor. Memory may not be affected but patients lose ability to initiate, organize, and follow through on even very simple plans and familiar activities. Language difficulties may occur as the disease progresses with the patient eventually losing the ability to speak. The disease will progress to the patient being in a terminal vegetative state requiring total care.
The usual cause of death in the final states is usually due to infection from pneumonia or other infections that can occur in patients who are so disabled.
