Women and Pain
Women and Pain : Why It Hurts and What You Can Do
by Mark Young, M.D., Karen Baar, M.P.H.

Guide Rating -

Over the last few years the medical world has been coming face to face with a stark reality - men and women are different and so are there health care needs. Physicians are now recognizing that there can be no standard of care between the sexes. Now this new book by Dr. Mark Young addresses the unique needs of women when it comes to pain. As Dr. Young says in the opening pages of this book "Women feel more pain, seek help more aggressively, and make more active attempts to cope with pain than men." He then goes on to say" unfortunately, we also know that too frequently women aren't taken seriously. Frankly our health care system often disregards women in pain."

Dr. Young throughout this book explains the pain women experience, how it is different and how it can be treated. He uses case studies from his own practice to highlight his experience in the topic.

The book is divided into three parts. Part one deals with the gender differences that explain why women experience more pain than men. He also discussed the disparities in care of pain that women received, with sometimes disturbing facts. Dr. Young states "Women may undergo surgery more frequently than men for similar pain syndromes".

Part two of this book discusses the various conditions, illnesses and injuries that may cause women to have pain. He also discusses some strategies for relieving or decreasing the intensity of pain. From PMS to migraines he discusses the most common (an uncommon) causes of pain woman may seek treatment for.

Part three targets pain treatments, from the traditional prescriptions we are familiar with to complementary and holistic remedies that the author has found helpful for some women.

I would recommend this book as an important reference for both women who have pain and for health care provides who treat women with pain. It is written for both professional and non-professional. It includes practical advice that women can use everyday.
