"I have a leaflet saying that getting more fiber in your diet wll help reduce the "bad" cholesterol. The typical American diet is way too low in fiber. Eat more whole grains, vegetables & fruits." "

If you are a woman, married or in a long term relationship chances are that you will spend a number of your senior years alone. The World Health Organization estimates that average life expectancy for women in the United States is 72 years as compared to 67 years for men. This equates to several years that women will live without their mates. Is possible for women to keep their mates healthier, thereby extending their life span?

In her new book, author and physician Larrian Gillespie gives women the information and tools they need to help keep their men healthy, fit and virile throughout their lives. It is a book that deals with men's health but written for women. As a physician specializing in urology the author knows that most men will not go the doctor until as she says "they fear something important is about to fall off." She knows that women are more proactive in seeking healthcare, and has written this book to empower women to take charge and improve men's health.

The importance of The Gladiator Diet is based on the fact that excess weight, especially around the middle converts the hormone testosterone into estrdiol, the active form of estrogen (female hormone). This reduction of testosterone can increase cholesterol and blood sugar. This can lead to impotence, heart disease and premature death. Following The Gladiator Diet and a program of moderate but regular exercise, men should be able to reduce their waistline to less than 42 inches, and get rid of their "Buddha Belly"; that fat layer that lowers their testosterone.

In The Gladiator Diet Dr. Gillespie has given women a blueprint for improving the health of their men. This is not just a diet, but it is a lifestyle, presented in a down to earth and easy to understand style. Dr. Gillespie lays out step by step a lifestyle plan for all men to maintain health, and sexual energy from youth through the elder years. While covering diet she dispels many of the myths that have been perpetrated in the last few years about low fat, high carbohydrate diets. The Gladiator Diet is based on a diet that should be 40% protein, 35%carbohydrates and 25%fats and is presented in an easy to understand format. She has also included recipes for dishes such as "The Terminator Salad" and "Bay Watch Turkey Burgers". All the recipes follow the proportions Dr. Gillespie recommends as being the best combination for men.

The author also discusses the vitamins and minerals that a man's balanced diet should include and discuses the importance of water in the diet. Limited amounts of alcohol and very restricted caffeine are also recommended.

While primarily a book about diet, also included is advice and information about reducing stress, exercise and even instructions on doing "penis pushups" to help improve sexual performance and enjoyment. Dr. Gillespie has also included a section with resources for helping women to help their men benefit from The Gladiator Diet.

I would recommend this book for any woman who is concerned about her man's health. At 182 pages it is not overwhelming, or intimidating. It is laid out in an easy to read and logical manner. The wording is understandable with no "Doctor speak" evident. Dr. Gillespie is frank, down to earth and uses humor with good effect. Her research and basis for her recommendations are safe, sound and full of common sense.
