Definition: A condition in which the patient has a higher blood pressure than that judged to be normal. In general, if on several separate occasion the systolic pressure (first or higher number) is above 140 mmHg or the diastolic pressure (second or lower number) is above 90 mm the patient is considered to have high blood pressure.
