Question - Why would prednisone be used to diagnose anemia?:

My question for you relates to my mother, who is age 94. The doctor has found that blood tests show slight anemia, and he has prescribed prednisone 'as a diagnostic.' My only acquaintance with prednisone was many years ago when I didn't ovulate, took prednisone for 8 months and became pregnant; and my brother was given prednisone when he had poison ivy. Can you please enlighten me as to what it would have to do with anemia?

Guide Responds:

If she has "Immune Hemolytic Anemia" then the use of Prednisone is appropriate. What this basically is, is that the body builds up an immune response to it's own red blood cells. The patient will have typical symptoms of anemia, tiredness, weakness etc with no obvious bleeding. The spleen (an abdominal organ) may also be swollen and the red blood cell count will be low. Causes are varied, but can be caused by a blood transfusion, a medication reaction, or another illness. Prednisone is the first line treatment, it helps to reduce the immune response. If it check out that this is what your Mom has then she is getting the correct treatment. If the doc said "diagnostic" it may be he is suspecting this is the diagnosis and will be sure if he sees a good response from the drug.
