The Department of Health and Human Services has lauched a project to reduce and prevent Medicare fraud. Public reporting of possible fraud is key to elimination of fraud.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 1 week

Here's How:

  1. Never give your Medicare or Medicaid number to strangers.
  2. Never give your Medicare or Medicaid number to anyone for a 'free' service. If the service is truly free, they do not need the number.
  3. To qualify for Medicare coverage, medical equipement and supplies must be prescribed by a physician.
  4. Do not let anyone pressure you into requesting unneeded services or equipment from your doctor.
  5. Do not accept medical supplies or equipment from a door-to-door salesperson.
  6. Review all bills for medical services or equipment. Report any discrepancies.
  7. Do not let anyone review your medical or prescription records without permission from your personal physician.
  8. Beware of anyone using high pressure or scare tactics to sell you something. Medicare will cover a second opinion.
  9. Do not let anyone use your Medicare or Medicaid card to obtain medical care for themselves or others.
  10. Shop around for the best price. Be wary of providers with higher prices for medicare benficiaries.

Tips:

  1. Medicare fraud hurts everyone.
  2. Most Medicare fraud involves billing for services not provided.
  3. Only your doctor can fill out a statement of medical necessity for services.
