Yellow Vegetables Good For Older Eyes

Thursday August 17, 2006
A study from the University of Wisconsin in Madison suggests that yellow pigments found in vegatables such as corn and yellow squash can protect women from developing age related vision loss. The study look at the diets of women and found that those who are younger than 75 who at a diet rich in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin (found in the yellow pigment) had a lower risk of developing age related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the most common cause of vision loss among seniors. Current treatments do not cure the condition but do slow progress.

Researchers suggest everyone eat a diet rich in carotenoids to help protect their eyesight as they age. Foods rich in these nutrients include corn, squash, egg yolks, broccoli, peas and leafy green vegetables.
