Alzheimer's Patch on the Horizon

Wednesday July 19, 2006
Swedish researchers studied a new way of delivering Alzheimer’s medications and found it much easier to use while minimizing unpleasant side effects. The study compared delivery of the drugs using a once a day patch versus the standard twice daily capsules. The patch sold under the name cholinesterase inhibitors is in a class of drugs known as cholinesterase inhibitors. The more familiar and older drug Aricept is in the same class of drugs. Researchers found the patch produced cognitive improvements similar to the oral medication but did not cause nausea and vomiting as often. Overall, the patch was very well tolerated and for those Alzheimer’s patients who have problems swallowing may improve treatment compliance.
