Artificial Light and Breast Cancer
Tuesday December 27, 2005
If you are a female who worked the night shift you may be at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Research reported in the Dec. 1 issue of Cancer Research shows that extended exposure to artificial light for premenopausal women increases the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer rates among night shift workers have always been higher. Researchers blame this stimulation of tumor growth on the suppression of the hormone melatonin caused by exposure to artificial light.
