Researchers from the VA Medical Center in Houston report that obese adults (with a BMI - body mass index greater than 30) have almost three times the risk of developing GERD, erosive esophagitis and esophageal cancer as adults of more normal weight.

Nearly 20% of adults in the United States report symptoms of GERD and esophageal adenocarcinoma rates have quadrupled in the last 20 years ago as the population gets fatter.
